We welcome referrals

Mackay Hearing welcomes referral from medical, allied health and other professionals, such as:

  • General Practitioners
  • Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists
  • Speech Pathologists
  • Hospitals, child health clinics, other health facilities
  • Teachers, child care workers
  • other professionals

Mackay Hearing also welcome self-referral.

Our services

Hearing assessments – for adults and children / infants

  • Full comprehensive diagnostic hearing assessment – pure tone audiometry (air and bone conduction where possible), speech discrimination, tympanometry, acoustic reflex assessment and otoacoustic emissions testing. Referred to exclude hearing loss and underlying retrocochlear pathology or when a patient complains of difficulty hearing in background noise, poor speech understanding, people mumbling or tinnitus.
  • Full comprehensive diagnostic hearing assessment – for employment, aviation, police, diving, military, work cover and coal board medicals. Medical-legal reports supported by comprehensive assessment.
  • Free / subsidised services through the Government Hearing Program – Mackay Hearing is accredited to provide free / subsidised services through the Australian Government Hearing Services Program. Eligible pensioners and veterans can receive services with no out of pocket expenses.
  • Play audiometry – children from 3-6 years (dependent on developmental age). Referred to exclude hearing loss in young children, establish middle ear function or cochlear status, through otoacoustic emissions testing.
  • Visual Response Orientated Audiometry for children 9 months – 4 years, service coming soon. Testing from birth is available – referral to exclude hearing loss in young children, middle ear dysfunction and cochlea status.
  • Report forwarded to nominated GP within 24 hours of Mackay Hearing consultation.

Hearing treatment

  • Hearing aid fittings – wide range of latest technology hearing aids from a variety of suppliers. Includes behind-the-ear (BTE), in-the-ear (ITE), completely-in-canal (CIC) and bone conduction implant devices. Certain hearing aids feature rechargeability, direct bluetooth streaming to smart devices and tinnitus specific programs.
  • Free / subsidised services through the Government Hearing Program – Mackay Hearing is accredited to provide free / subsidised services through the Australian Government Hearing Services Program. Eligible pensioners and veterans can receive services with no out of pocket expenses.
  • Assistive listening device fittings – wide range of latest technology assistive listening device, such as FM systems, infra-red TV devices, vibrating alarm systems, vibrating alarm clocks and others.
  • Hearing aid maintenance plans – available for clients fitted with hearing devices from another provider.

Counselling and support for hearing loss

  • Clinic-based counselling and support – clinic based counselling and support on the harmful effects of noise exposure, advice on ear protection and managing hearing loss.
  • Hear for you (Mackay) – peer based support group for people managing hearing loss. Meetings include “Active Communication Education (ACE)” programs – an evidence-based education and support program for people managing hearing loss.

Central Auditory Processing Disorder assessment and treatment– for children from 6 years

  • Full comprehensive diagnostic Central Auditory Processing Disorder assessment
  • Treatment programs – specifically designed computer programs proven to improve memory and spatial processing difficulties.
  • Fitting of assistive listening devices – fitting of Dynamic Sound Field Systems to classrooms and individual FM systems to children to improve signal-to-noise ratio.
  • Report forwarded to nominated GP within 24 hours of Mackay Hearing consultation.

Tinnitus assessment and management/counselling

  • Full comprehensive diagnostic hearing assessment – with pitch and loudness matching to determine severity of tinnitus.
  • Management / counselling – management and coping strategies and general support.

Custom fit Ear Plugs

  • Custom fit ear plugs – swim plugs, noise plugs, sleep plugs and musician’s plugs moulded to shape of client’s ear.

Cerumen (ear wax) management

  • Safe and gentle cerumen removal – can be undertaken during an appointment for another purpose (eg. hearing assessment) or at any time necessary.
