One in seven people experience tinnitus and, past the age of 55, that figure climbs to one in three.
Tinnitus is a condition where people experience noises in one or both ears when no physical noise is present, such as ringing, buzzing or whistling.
Mackay Hearing Principal Audiologist and Director Jodie Miles will share coping strategies for tinnitus at a free seniors’ health information session on August 25.
Starting at 9am, the info session will include presentations from Mackay Hearing and Jody Walker Naturopathy, free zinc level testing and a free homemade morning tea to finish.
Ms Miles said that the event was open to all seniors, not just clients.
“Over 70{92467a49ff12a820a3b3ae4b2cf52bd04325c168956e2cbcc290838a2f8c9516} of Australians over 70 years have some form of hearing loss, with as many as 85{92467a49ff12a820a3b3ae4b2cf52bd04325c168956e2cbcc290838a2f8c9516} of people in nursing homes being hearing impaired” Ms Miles said.
“As well as discussing tinnitus, my presentation will cover the latest research into hearing loss and how eligible pensioners and veterans can secure free hearing aids.”
“Our hearing is our connection to the world. Older people can often feel disconnected when they have hearing issues, and we want them to know that there is excellent help available.”
Jody Walker’s talk will look at health eating and lifestyle habits for wellness and ageing.
The free seniors’ session will be at the Senior Citizens’ Centre on Macalister Street.
Bookings are essential and can be made by calling Mackay Hearing on 4952 4649 – bookings close August 19.
